In the past year, the experts managed to reveal several new secrets of our planet. The scientists found hidden rivers, parts of lost continents, traces of ancient rainforests, new data on the history of the Earth, using unique modern technologies. Some of these discoveries literally shook the world. One of them is associated with the Yellowstone. The hottest point of the volcano is hidden under the geysers and hot springs of the national park. Almost 9 million years ago, the volcano exploded in two powerful eruptions. They managed to prove them due to a special analysis of volcanic rocks and sediments.
These previously unknown eruptions are considered the largest in the history of the planet. Over 23 thousand square kilometers were covered with volcanic debris. Another discovery is related to the seismic activity of the Earth.
It turns out that earthquakes send powerful seismic waves to the planet. When disturbances arise, special instruments register them on the other side of the planet, and thereby indicate mysterious structures inside the Earth called zones of ultra-low speeds. They are connected with the boundary of the planet's solid mantle and the liquid outer core and represent giant drops. The two largest of them could be almost 100 times larger than Everest.
The drop under the Pacific Ocean, as calculations showed, was about a thousand kilometers across. Amazing data received this year about the lost islands in the North Sea. We are talking about a territory called Doggerland, it was inhabited by ancient people and was able to survive a very powerful tsunami.
The disaster struck about 8 thousand years ago on the plain between the Netherlands and Great Britain, flooding the region. Studies showed that some of the islands in this area were able to survive the tsunami, becoming a haven for the people of the Stone Age for several thousand years. The scientists also managed to make an assessment of the state of the solid inner core of the Earth. It was formed about 1-1.3 billion years ago.
By creating a simulation, the researchers figured out how long it took for the planet to grow from a small lump of molten iron to its current size. The core of our planet is at least one billion years old. Meanwhile, part of the lost continent was discovered under Canada. It was found due to chemical prints obtained from rock samples in Baffin Island. 150 million years ago, the lost continent disintegrated into fragments and they disappeared under Canada.
One of them was found. It is located at a depth of 400 kilometers under Baffin Island. In the same year, the geologists discovered hidden underwater rivers near Australia. They have freezing salty water, it flows into the ocean.
The rivers were identified with the help of deep-sea devices that recorded warm currents near the coast in winter. Rivers stretch for hundreds of kilometers and carry important nutrients as well as hazardous pollutants into the ocean.
